Abstract:
Several rootstock clones of Nanking cherry have been selected that are either compatible or incompatible with scion cultivars of peach.
We investigated the hydraulic conductivity of these selections.
The sap flow rate of potted trees was measured by the heat balance method, and the hydraulic conductivity was estimated by the recovery rate of sap flow after rewatering subsequent to water stress.
After dissecting the stem segment with the graft union, sap flow resistance was determined with a pressure chamber under 0.02 MPa of pressure.
There was a significant correlation of r=0.784* (n=14) between the mean shoot growth and recovery rate of sap flow, when comparing the flow rate 3 hours after rewatering to the rate before rewatering.
The same level of correlation, but negative, r=-0.780*(n=13) was also observed between the shoot growth and the sap flow resistance in the stem segment.
We propose that the heat balance method of estimating hydraulic conductivity in intact plants could be used for the initial selection of compatible dwarfing rootstocks.
