FOREWORD
This volume of Acta Horticulturae forms the Proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants held within the XXVI International Horticultural Congress, Toronto, Canada, 11-17 August, 2002.
The first symposium in this series was held at Wageningen, 12-16 August 1985, the proceedings being published as Acta Horticulturae 182. This volume is now out of print, but individual papers may be downloaded from the ISHS Acta website http://www.actahort.org/books/182/. Then followed the Seattle symposium, 10-14 August, 1994 (Acta Horticulturae 413, http://www.actahort.org/books/413/). The third symposium was held in Edinburgh, 20-26 July 1998 the proceedings being published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in December 1999 under the title Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants.
The taxonomy of cultivated plants and related disciplines remains a challenge to breeders, producers, and users of plants and new technologies.
The Conveners of this symposium tried to bring together scientists, lawyers, researchers, managers and user-groups from around the world to examine key issues relating to the complex areas of both cultivated plant nomenclature and systematics.
Being embedded within the ISHS XXVI International Horticultural Congress provided a unique opportunity to encourage a broader audience to participate and hear the presentations made by various experts from around the world.
Four keynote speakers introduced special themes and invited presentations were heard on a variety of topics.
As part of the symposium, side meetings were held concentrating on key issues such as formation of cultivar epithets and nomenclatural standards.
As has become a tradition, the IUBS Commission for the Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants held a plenary meeting to consider amendments for the next edition of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, which in the mean time, was published in the Acta Horticulturae series, as AH 647. An open meeting of the putative International Association for Cultivated Plant Taxonomy was also held.
Special thanks are owed to the session moderators who helped to keep the presentations on time.

PREFACE
The papers contained in this volume of Acta Horticulturae report the proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants.
Keynote speakers and authors of selected contributed oral and poster presentations were given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for publication.
These manuscripts were reviewed by the symposium editors and other referees.
Only those papers judged suitable for publication following the authors consideration of reviewer suggestions appear in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
The ISHS acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of all editors and reviewers.
