Abstract:
FOREWORD
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is the Proceedings of the 2002 International Society for Horticultural Science Congress Symposium on Protected Cultivation 2002: In Search of Structures, Systems and Plant Materials for Sustainable Greenhouse Production.
The objective of this symposium was to provide an update on all aspects of protected cultivation, especially greenhouse production.
One hundred and sixteen presenters from twenty two countries contributed four keynote addresses, thirty two invited oral papers and eighty posters.
The various contributions in this book are organized in four chapters, corresponding to the four daily sessions in the symposium on four major themes; each chapter starting with the keynote address of the day, followed by the oral presentations and concluding with the poster presentations.
Chapter 1 / Day 1 - Structures and Systems for Protected Cultivation; including: structure design, covering materials, climate control equipment for heating, cooling, shading and ventilation, robotics, closed ecological systems, and space cultivation technologies.
Dr.
G. Giacomelli, convener/coordinator.
Chapter 2 / Day 2 - Crop Responses to Environment; including: crop development, crop response to closed environments, modeling and artificial intelligence for crop management, response of crops to abiotic stresses, crop production as affected by season.
Dr.
A. Abou-Hadid, convener/coordinator.
Chapter 3 / Day 3 - Plant Nutrition, Water and Nutrient Delivery Systems, and Pest and Disease Management; including: water and nutrient requirements, hydroponics including substrates and water culture, design and control of recirculation systems, biofertilizers, integrated production and protection systems, soil disinfestation alternatives, organic or ecological production models.
Dr.
A. Gosselin, convener/coordinator.
Chapter 4 / Day 4 - New Crops to Fulfill Market Requirements; including: flowers, exotic vegetables, bush, vine and tree fruits, and aromatic and medicinal plants.
Dr.
M.M. Peet, convener/coordinator.
The Symposium organizers gratefully acknowledge the financial and other support from the following organizations:

PREFACE
The papers contained in this volume of Acta Horticulturae report the proceedings of a symposium on Protected Cultivation 2002: In Search of Structures, Systems and Plant Materials for Sustainable Greenhouse Production.
Keynote speakers and authors of selected contributed oral and poster presentations were given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for publication.
These manuscripts were reviewed by the symposium editor and other referees.
Only those papers judged suitable for publication following the authors consideration of reviewer suggestions appear in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
The ISHS acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of all editors and reviewers.
They have made a significant contribution to assuring the quality of this publication.
