Abstract:
The protection, preservation and improvement of the natural are major problems that the contemporary civilisation has to deal with.
Romania takes part in solving this complex issue through its programs and measures of national and international interest. The group of measures at national level includes the preservation and extension of the green areas as a very important matter. This aspect has been approached both in the themes of scientific research and in the programs of economic development. The ornamental trees and shrubs, together with flowers and turf are the main part of the program for green areas. The themes approached within the activity of the SCDP (The Research and Development Station for Fruit Tree Growing) Baneasa, Bucuresti, an institution in the Southern part of Romania, contributes to the solution of these problems, through its clearly defined objectives. The researches made have, as their main output, the dissemination of the ornamental species and varieties, native and foreign, and also of clones obtained through selection, especially those that are decorative and adaptable to the local conditions of soil and climate. Thus, the range of varieties of ornamental trees and shrubs included in the extension of green areas is in a permanent modernization, harmoniously combining the useful and the aesthetic.
