Abstract:
In a research program to improve and develop better line bred Salvia splendens cultivars, two different genetic male sterility systems have been found.
The first system was found in a single male sterile plant of the cultivar Harbinger in 1962. This system has been found to be inhereted as a single dominant gene maintained in a heterozygous condition.
The second system developed from a single male sterile plant found in the cultivar Bonfire Early Strain in 1967. It was found to be inherited as a single recessive gene.
Using the dominant male sterile system for seed production, the first Fl-hybrid salvia cultivar Hot Pants, was introduced for sale in 1972 followed by Torch in 1975 and in 1976 by Trail Blazer and Tallyho.
