ISHS Acta Horticulturae 628: XXVI International Horticultural Congress: Issues and Advances in Postharvest Horticulture

FOREWORD AND PREFACE

Authors:   E.W. Hewett, R.K. Prange, ISHS Board of Directors
Abstract:

FOREWORD

This volume of Acta Horticulturae comprises the submitted papers from the Issues and Advances in Postharvest Horticulture Symposium, held as part of the 26th International Horticultural Congress and Exhibition in Toronto, Canada. This symposium was the largest symposium at the Congress in terms of presentations (oral and poster) and submitted manuscripts, which provides evidence of the increasing recognition in horticulture research and development of the benefits realized from better methods to preserve the quality of fresh fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. The Conveners and the International Scientific Committee selected several themes to be emphasized during the Symposium and arranged for invited keynote presentations and/or submitted oral presentations on each of the following themes. Additional presentations were given as posters arranged according to the same themes.

  • Postharvest Technology for Developing Countries
  • New Technologies
  • Pre/Postharvest Linkages
  • Growth Regulators and 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP)
  • MA/CA Storage
  • General Physiology
  • Oxidative Stress and Nutraceuticals
  • Postharvest Disease
  • Sensory Evaluation and Semi-processed Products
  • Ornamentals
  • Cultivar Evaluation

A major reason for the large number of participants in this Symposium may be the importance being given in developing countries to improvement in horticultural production and consumption. Therefore, this Symposium endeavoured to provide a forum for promoting more postharvest technology application in developing countries. It was also recognized that, since our last Congress, the use of 1-MCP as a postharvest anti-ethylene preservative has emerged as a major area of postharvest research. A full day of the 4-day Symposium was devoted to oral and poster presentations on this topic, attracting audiences exceeding 500 attendees at times. There were 184 oral and poster presentations from 38 countries. This Acta contains 111 articles from these presentations arranged according to the themes listed above. The co-conveners thank the members of the International Scientific Committee, Keynote Speakers, Editorial Committee and colleagues who assisted in the Symposium and the Acta editorial process. Special thanks to Ms. Donna Dean and Ms. Conny Bishop for exceptional assistance in manuscript editing for this Acta.

Co-conveners: Errol W. Hewett and Robert K. Prange

PREFACE

The papers contained in this volume of Acta Horticulturae report the proceedings of a symposium on Issues and Advances in Postharvest Horticulture. Keynote speakers and authors of contributed oral and poster presentations were given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for publication. These manuscripts were reviewed by the Symposium Editor, a member of the Editorial Board and other referees. Only those papers judged suitable for publication following necessary amendments appear in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
The ISHS acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of all editors and reviewers. They have made a significant contribution to assuring the quality of this publication.
