THE P FERTILIZATION OF POTATO: INCREASING AGRONOMIC EFFICIENCY AND DECREASING ENVIRONMENTAL RISK

Abstract:
New P fertilization concepts must consider the degree of soil P saturation and higher efficiency of P fertilizers The Mehlich-III P/Al phosphorus saturation index is a reliable agri-environmental soil test for implementing effective P fertilizer recommendations and reducing P environmental risk to acceptable levels. Above a (P/Al)M-III value of 15%, the model recommends adding a dose of P equal to P removal by tubers with a tuber yield of 40 Mg ha-1. This emphasizes the maintenance of high crop yield in potato agroecosystems for both agronomic and environmental reasons. An organo-mineral fertilizer made of dried bioDEC-treated hog manure showed a higher performance compared to mineral P at high tuber yield (>38 Mgha-1) in low-fertility soils. Hence, the (P/Al)M-III saturation index and bioDEC-treated hog manure were found to be good P management practices for the potato in acid soils, especially at high yield level.
