Abstract:
FOREWORD
This volume of Acta Horticulturae, strong of 35 contributions, is the Proceedings of the 2002 International Horticultural Congress Symposium “Toward Ecologically Sound Fertilization Strategies for Field Vegetable Production”.
The objective of this symposium was to share the different worldwide experiences, perspectives, strategies and results in achieving a more sustainable fertilization of field in line with former events: the “Workshops on Ecological Aspects of Vegetable Fertilization in Integrated Crop Production in the Field” (Switzerland, 1992, Germany, 1995, United Kingdom, 1998), and the workshop “Toward an ecologically sound fertilization in field vegetable production” held in Wageningen in 2000. Another very important objective was to provide an opportunity for researchers from around the world to exchange information regarding state of the art methodologies.
The first invited speaker, Dr.
Jacques Neeteson (Netherlands) put in perspective, with respect to the theme, the problems facing the agricultural sector as well as the European approach put forward to alleviate it.
The second invited speaker, Dr.
Timothy Hartz, from California, presented, from his North American perspective, the technological answers to the problem.
The winner of the graduate student poster competition was Mr.
Timothy Coolong, for his paper “Ammonium Nitrate Concentration Transforms Flavor Precursor Composition In Hydroponically Grown ‘Granex 33’ Onion” selected by a jury composed of Dr.
Kristian Thorup-Kristensen (President), Dr.
Clive Rahn, Dr.
Avner Silber and Dr.
Tiequan Zhang.
We would also like to thank the members of the Organizing Committee and of the Symposium International Scientific Committee, and all the other colleagues who aided in the editorial process. Finally, special thanks to Mrs.
Louise Dextraze for her help with manuscript organization and editing.
