Author:   S. Chen
Keywords:   Germplasm Resources, Actinidia chinensis Plannch, kiwifruit breeding, China
Abstract:
China is the original producer of the Kiwifruit, Actinidia sp. and also the country with the bulk of the world’s germplasm resources. Among them, the two species with the most important economic value are A. chinensis var. chinensis and A. deliciosa. At present, the most important cultivars growing in the world belong to these two species. Investigations by Chinese researchers over more than 30 years have revealed that the main area of the resource is in the Yangtse river valley, an area covering about 10 provinces. This resource will be of immense value in developing new cultivars. 15 cultivars have been bred by Chinese scientists in recent years have been introduced. They are used widely in China.
