| Abstract:
Recent world events have created historic opportunities for North American horticulture. The breakup of the Soviet Union and the opening of Eastern Europe to the West now allow researchers and commercial fruit growers to learn about many new berry crops. Coupled with an increasing consumer interest in the nutritional and health benefits of fruits and berries, the discovery of these new crops expands the choices and opportunities for commercial growers in Northern regions. The commercial development of berry crops which are virtually unknown in North America will also present significant challenges. Examples of potential new berry crops which offer opportunities include Sea Berry, or Sea Buckthorn, (Hippophae rhamnoides), Hardy Kiwi (Actinidia arguta), Honeyberry, or Edible Honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea), and Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas). | |
