Abstract:
A kaolin-based crop protectant (Surround WP) consistently reduced by 50% the densities of flower thrips (Frankliniella sp.) in a small planting of rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade). Surround WP was not phytotoxic to blueberry plants, and appeared harmless to foraging bees.
However, it did not significantly increase blueberry yield in 2001. Crop protectants like Surround WP were shown, for the first time, to be efficacious at reducing densities of adult thrips associated with southern blueberry fields and with further testing may be useful in blueberry IPM programs.
