GENETIC ANALYSIS OF ADVANCED POPULATIONS IN ANTIRRHINUM MAJUS (SNAPDRAGON)

Authors:   E.T. Martin, M.E. Stimart
Keywords:   narrow sense heritability, postharvest longevity, keeping quality, vaselife
Abstract:
Cutflowers and whole plants of Antirrhinum majus L. have been evaluated to determine heritability of traits important to breeding and production programs. P1 (a white, long-keeping postharvest cutflower type) and P2 (a white, short-keeping postharvest cutflower type) were hybridized to produce an F1 (P1 x P2) that was self-pollinated to produce an F2 population of 485 plants. The F2 were then self-pollinated to produce F3 lines and 106 randomly selected F3 lines were advanced through single-seed descent to the F5 generation. P1, P2, F1, F3, F4, and F5 lines were evaluated in the fall, winter, and spring of 2001-2002 in three replicated plantings in randomized complete block designs using standard forcing procedures. Heritability data is presented on 1) plant architecture including plant height, weight and branching habit, 2) quality traits including cutflower postharvest longevity, days to flower, floral region size and uniformity, stem diameter and strength, and number of florets opening after harvest and 3) traits related to postharvest physiology such as cutflower leaf area, senescence symptom and stomatal index.
