Abstract:
In Japan, Japanese flowering cherry trees are grown in the field, budded branches with flower buds are harvested and forced as a cut flower in early spring.
Production is unstable due to uneven flower bud formation on the branches.
In order to improve cut flower quality, the effect of timing of ringing and of benzylaminopurine (BA) treatment on flower bud formation in Japanese flowering cherry 'Keio-zakura' (Prunus x Keio-zakura Ohwi) was investigated.
Ringing in mid-August produced a larger number of flower buds per stem.
BA (300ppm) foliage treatment in mid-August also increased number of flower buds.
