NARCISSUS TAZETTA VAR. CHINENSIS: CAN DNA ANALYSIS REVEAL ITS ORIGIN?

Abstract:
In order to determine the origin of Japanese Narcissus, Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis, we analyzed the sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear rDNA. We collected samples from four different locations in Japan and one location in China. The phylogeny estimated from ITS sequences using neighbor-joining methods indicated that (1) Japanese narcissus collected at three locations in Japan was originated in Fu Jiang Sheng, China and thereafter small variations occurred in their growing habitat in Japan, (2) Japanese narcissus came to Japan from different locations in China and (3) N. tazetta, the source species of N. tazetta var. chinensis, is not similar to its variety. Narcissus papyraceus, an early flowering habit species, was not very different from N. tazetta var. chinensis. Sequences of the ITS regions are suitable for estimation of phylogeny at the variety level.
