Abstract:
China has the largest vegetable production in the world, and accounts for 75% of the vegetable output in Asia.
Annual production per capita reached 330 kg (net consumption per capita is about 200 kg). The sustainable increase is due to economical reform, expanding growing area, popularization of F1 hybrids, and improvment of production condition.
The establishment of the vegetable seed industry in China helped to speed up this process.
Institute-based enterprises played key role in the marketing new technology and their efforts brought the booming of vegetable industry.
The future priority for vegetable technology development should focus on quality enhancement, applied research for creation of desirable breeding materials, and postharvest technology.
Breeding environmentally friendly vegetables is an important topic for the future.
China has tremendous potential for vegetable industry for supplying the Chinese market and for export.
