Abstract:
Studies on the changes in endogenous hormones during ageing of leaves from Brussels sprout buttons indicated that gibberellins, and cytokinins were involved in the senescence process.
When leaves were taken from different positions in the sprout buttons, gradients of hormone activity were detected from the outer, dark-green to the inner, chlorotic leaves.
These results, together with those from growth regulator application experiments, suggest that cytokinins and gibberellins are of overriding importance in the development and retention of chlorophyll levels.
High cytokinin levels can be maintained either by pre-storage treatments with synthetic compounds or by using low temperature storage conditions.
