ISHS Acta Horticulturae 617: Workshop on Rootstocks' Performance in Phylloxera Infested Vineyards

CYTOLOGY OF THE HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTION IN ROOTSTOCKS-IMPROVEMENT OF ROOTSTOCK BREEDING

Authors:   M.F. El-Nady, M.-B. Schröder
Keywords:   rootstock, hypersensitivity, necrosis, Vitis, phylloxera
Abstract:
A dual non-sterile culture system of roots of the rootstock `Börner´ as well as of the grape phylloxera has been developed in order to observe the response of roots to phylloxera attack continuously. The roots of the rootstock `Börner´ reacted with two types of necroses depending on the developmental stage of root zones infected at the time of phylloxera attack. Necrosis type I developed within 12 to 24h after the phylloxera attacked the root meristem. Necrosis type II developed within 2 to 5 days after the phylloxera attack at the elongation zone of the root. Histological and histochemical aspects of necroses development are presented in detail.
