Abstract:
In the years from 1980 to 1990, approximately 90% of all grafted vines were produced solely for export. In 1984, a total of 41,5 million grafted vines were exported. Due to the embargo this figure dropped significantly during the period from 1991 to 1998, down to approximately 1-1.5 million grafted vines per year. After the embargo was lifted, export picked up considerably to approximately 3 million grafted vines in the year 2000. In 2001, a total export of 4 to 5 million vines is expected. In order to get an insight into the influence of certain rootstocks and their clones on agrobiological and technological characteristics of scion varieties, numerous investigations were conducted focusing primarily on: percentage of 1st Class grafts in the nursery, fruit quantity and quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic factors, and the influence of genetic origin on yield and other agrobiological characteristics.
