ISHS Acta Horticulturae 617: Workshop on Rootstocks' Performance in Phylloxera Infested Vineyards

NEWLY BRED CULTIVARS OF GRAPE PHYLLOXERA TOLERANT ROOTSTOCKS: RESULTS FROM 12 YEARS OF SELECTION

Abstract:
For testing phylloxera tolerance 179 descendants from crosses performed in Würzburg since 1962 were planted in a region with high phylloxera pressure near Caprino Veronese, North Italy, in 1988. After 12 years of selection and scrutiny for nodosities, tuberosities and root rot 26 newly bred phylloxera tolerant cultivars have been selected. In the often highly branched family trees of 18 newly bred rootstocks Vitis riparia is dominating, whereas two genotypes derive from Vitis cinerea, Sorisil and Vitis vinifera, respectively. The rootstocks selected are now under scrutiny in Franconia for sufficient water stress tolerance, for low disposition to chlorosis and to couluring, and a good nutrient uptake. Tests for grafting ability, affinity to different scions and adaptation to various soils and microclimates will follow.
