Abstract:
Selected somaclones of strawberry ‘Elsanta’ with increased resistance or tolerance to Verticillium dahliae were proliferated in vitro, rooted ex vitro and acclimatized in a greenhouse. Their growth parameters were compared with plants derived from in vitro shoots of the standard cultivar proliferated in vitro during 7 or 24 passages. The shoots of the somaclone produced roots about 3 days earlier than control plants. The rooted plants after 7-week-growth in a greenhouse had 16-39% bigger leaves, 12-23% longer leaf petioles and 33-39% greater diameter of crowns than both controls. This suggests that the selection aimed at resistance to the pathogen favoured also bigger plants. There were also differences in growth parameters between both controls, showing that prolonged culturing in vitro increased occurrence of somaclonal variation.
