Abstract:
Helichrysum italicum and H. stoechas (family Asteraceae) are two native species of the Mediterranean region. The flower heads contain essential oils and other useful secondary metabolites. H. italicum and H. stoechas are used in folk medicine because of their antibacterial, antitoxic, diuretic and antiallergic properties; moreover, they are appreciated as dried flowers. Tissue cultures from in vivo germinated seedlings of H. italicum and H. stoechas were established. Shoot induction was obtained from micropropagated leaf tissue on a medium supplemented with zeatin and IAA (H. italicum) and on a medium with thidiazuron (H. stoechas). A system for callus production has been developed on a medium enriched with 2,4-D and kinetin, obtaining cell masses that could be used for suspension cultures and secondary metabolites studies.
