| Abstract:
Early research on reproductive biology of conifers was described under subheadings of orders and families. Recent research allows more unifying principles. Reproductive cycles are of three types. Times and methods of cone initiation have been determined and combined with physiological research. This has made cone induction possible in many species. Pollination mechanisms are of three general types, with sub-categories in some. Ultrastructural studies of gametes, fertilization and proembryo development combined with molecular studies have determined different patterns of cytoplasmic inheritance. New areas of research discussed are incompatibility mechanisms, in vitro fertilization, pollen transformations and sterility. | |
