PERFORMANCE OF EXOTIC CONIFERS IN FINLAND

Abstract:
We present the main results of an inventory in 1996-97 of the species trials established mainly during the 1920’s and 1930’s in 8 research areas of the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The species tested originated from 176 different seed sources in the northern hemisphere, covering Europe, North America and East Asia. Of the 73 taxa planted in 605 trial plantations, 57 taxa in 492 plantations still survived in 1996 and 1997. However, only some of the exotic species, especially those of the genus Larix, have potential as economically important timber species in Finland. Instead, many of the species have become important in landscape management and ornamental use. The taxa were classified according to four performance categories: good (20 taxa), fair (20), poor (17), and totally failed (16).
