STABILITY IN THE NAMING OF CONIFERS: INTRODUCING THE NEW REGISTRATION FORM FOR CULTIVAR NAMES

Author:   P. Trehane
Keywords:   checklists, code of nomenclature, consensus taxonomy, cultivar epithets, originators, registers, taxonomic framework
Abstract:
Since 1962, the Royal Horticultural Society has acted as the authority for registering and recording names of conifer cultivars. Publication of a comprehensive Register has been in alphabetic parts and is complemented by occasional supplements. To facilitate compilation, a new Registration Form has been developed so as to bring in a degree of consistency for the compilation of data. This form ensures that the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants are followed in the registration process, and is designed with ease of use in mind, especially from the viewpoint of plantsmen and horticulturists who may not have scientific training. This paper discusses the registration process, the information required for the form, and outlines how a consensus taxonomy is required as a background for nomenclatural stability.
