CONIFERS ON THE PRINTED PAGE: A SHORT HISTORY OF CONIFER LITERATURE AND ILLUSTRATION

Author:   B. Elliott
Keywords:   chromolithography, engraving, lithography, photography, woodcut
Abstract:
This paper offers a brief survey of the major works and general trends in the published literature on conifers from Belon’s De arboribus coniferis in 1553 to the 20th century. It shows the ways in which the depiction of conifers, and thus the ease of their identification, was affected by the development of techniques of illustration, from the woodcut to the photograph. Among the works examined will be the herbals of L’Obel, Tabernaemontanus, Gerard, and Mattioli, with their woodcut illustrations; engraving in the works of Tournefort, Johnstone, Weinmann, and the Nouveau Duhamel of 1801-1825; the arrival of lithography and chromolithography in Lambert’s Genus Pinus, Antoine’s Coniferen, and the Pinetum Britannicum of Lawson, Lindley and Ravenscroft; and finally, photography from Clinton-Baker, Elwes and Henry to the present day
