Abstract:
Some of the favoured conifers in British gardens are very susceptible to the common fungal root diseases caused by Armillaria and Phytophthora species but others are highly resistant.
Damaging foliage diseases are rare but foliage of some cypresses is often killed by the aphid Cinara cupressi and of some spruces by the aphid Elatobium abietinum and the mite Oligonychus ununguis while that of some larches is damaged or killed by the adelgid, Adelges laricis. Bark diseases caused by the fungi Seiridium cardinale and Phomopsis juniperovora are common on some members of the Cupressaceae. Control measures are outlined for each problem.
Serious damage from biotic agents other than aphids, mites or fungi is rare.
