THE OREGON EXPEDITION 1850-1854: JOHN JEFFREY AND HIS CONIFERS

Abstract:
The Oregon Association was formed in 1849 by a group of Scottish horticulturists with the aim of continuing the botanical explorations in western North America so successfully begun by David Douglas. Subscribers to the expedition were invited and John Jeffrey was appointed as collector. He travelled from 1850 until his disappearance early in 1854. Jeffrey was criticised for results which were felt to be unsatisfactory but his introductions, reintroductions and discoveries, particularly of conifers, have been significant. The archive at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh contains papers and letters pertaining to the Association and to the expedition. This is discussed and details of the subscribers are given
