Abstract:
Conifers have made a significant contribution to British horticulture.
From the beginning of the active introduction of conifers in the 16th century, we see an increasing degree of sophistication in their use in British gardens.
Experience and observation have shown that the success of conifers in cultivation is determined by their environmental preferences and that certain parts of the British Isles have provided more suitable conditions than others.
The future use of conifers is assured as they have few peers in the garden flora for use as specimen trees, structure and shelter utilisation and as dwarf shrubs.
