THE DIVERSITY, PHYTOGEOGRAPHY AND ECOLOGY OF SPRUCES (PICEA: PINACEAE) IN EURASIA

Author:   P.A. Schmidt
Keywords:   chorology, distribution, East Submediterranean region, ecology, Japan, North Eurasia, Sino-Himalaya, spruce regions, Turkestan
Abstract:
The diversity, phytogeography and ecology of the Eurasian species of Picea are reviewed. The genus Picea is almost entirely Holarctic. Of its approx. 35 species, about 28 (with about 15 varieties) occur in Eurasia. The chief centres of diversity are the Sino-Himalayan region and Japan (particularly Central Honshu). The Eurasian species can be assigned to 5 ‘spruce regions’ (Sino-Himalayan, Turkestan, East Submediterranean, Japanese, North Eurasian) and three chorological groups which can be further subdivided. Ten species, and five or six varieties, are globally threatened.
