Abstract:
Ruscus hypoglossum L. is an evergreen shrub diffused in southern Europe and Asia Minor and cultivated as garden plant and for cut foliage.
This species is characterised by rigid stems or cladophylls, which have coriaceous and shiny green leaves, with a long vase life.
Plants propagated by crown division were soilless cultivated for cut foliage production using expanded clay, volcanic lapilli, perlite and pumice.
The trial was carried out over a three-year period (1999/2001) in an unheated greenhouse with PMMA cover.
Biometrical and yield parameters were recorded.
Differences were observed in number and length of stems but not for fresh weight and number of leaves whose values were, respectively, nearly 10 g and 16 leaves/stem.
Best results were obtained by the pumice substrate which produced more than 40 stems/plant with an average length of 56,5 cm.
