PROTECTED CULTIVATIONS OF STRAWBERRY IN SICILY: ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF SOME RECENT PRODUCT AND PROCESS INNOVATIONS

Keywords:   innovative technology, production cycle, farm decision-making, profitability
Abstract:
The protected cultivations of large (Fragaria x Ananassa) and small (Fragaria vesca) fruit strawberries in Sicily have recently been characterized by several productive innovations, strengthening the regional leadership in the context of Italian early strawberry cultivation. The aim of the paper is to collect information on the Sicilian protected strawberry sector, with reference both to territorial (province of Trapani) and farm management aspects. A farm survey was carried out on a sample of 22 farms, where 4 and 2 crop typologies of large and small fruit strawberries were respectively sorted out. Their annual farm working timetables were analysed, as well as their harvest calendars. Microeconomic analysis has borne evidence of a remarkable profitability, despite the high production costs.
