Abstract:
This study was carried out at Marsala (Sicily) in 2000-2001 comparing cold stored and plug plants of 2 cultivars (Camarosa and Tudla) and 2 selections (91.214.2, and 91.201.5) derived from the strawberry breeding programs included in the national project “Frutticoltura” supported by the Ministry of Agriculture (MiPAF). Planting occurred on August 30th (cold stored plants) and on October 6th, 2000 (plug plants) in a multiple tunnel. Vegetative parameters as well as production and fruit quality were recorded. The fruiting season of plug plants started in December 8th , 63 days after planting, significantly earlier than cold stored plants (February; 125 days after planting). No differences were observed on total commercial yield per plant, average berry weight, fruit firmness and content of soluble solids, but differences in all parameters were observed among the cultivars and selections under experiment.
