EFFECTIVENESS OF COPPER COMPOUNDS IN THE CONTROL OF BACTERIAL DISEASES OF KIWIFRUIT PLANTS

Authors:   G.M. Balestra, M. Bovo
Keywords:   epiphytic bacteria, copper compounds, control, Pseudomonas syringae pv. siringae, Pseudomonas viridiflava.
Abstract:
Bacterial pathogens (Pseudomonas syringae pv. siringae, Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae and Pseudomonas viridiflava) of kiwifruit cause serious damages in the major areas of the world areas where kiwifruit vines are cultivated. To control these micro-organisms various chemical compounds are utilised. Known and new copper compounds were compared to verify their efficacy against Pseudomonas syringae pv. siringae and Pseudomonas viridiflava so as to reduce the amount of copper utilised. Copper sulphate shows are effective against bacterial pathogens in a similar way as copper oxychloride. Fewer sprays of copper sulphate and at 10fold lower concentration than copper hydrochlorite effectively reduced the population of these bacteria on the kiwifruit phyllosphere (twigs, buds, and leaves).
