Keywords:   kiwifruit, breeding, cultivar
Abstract:
During field investigations carried out in Emilia - Romagna and Latium, an unusual disease has been observed on kiwifruit plantings of the cultivar ‘Hayward’. The main symptoms consisted of a hypertrophy of the entire trunks and plant development was significantly affected. Cross sections of diseased trunks and larger branches showed a marked brown discoloration of the xylem starting from the central core, wood rings were also irregularly arranged. Diseased plant samples were tested in the laboratory for the presence of phytopathogenic agents. Various fungi were isolated from roots and transverse trunk sections of about 2 cm in thickness, cut at different heights. The most frequent were: Acremonium spp., Cylindrocarpon spp., Fusarium spp., Phaeoacremonium spp., Phialophora spp. and Phomopsis spp. Along with these mitosporic fungi, some basidiomycetes were also sometimes found. In addition PCR products of the ITS regions of some Phaeoacremonium isolates were investigated.
