Abstract:
Many kiwifruit growers in Korea have carried out pollination using ‘Lycopodium’ powder and ‘PollenAid’ liquid, which are both imported from overseas at high cost. We tried to develop an alternative pollen diluent several years ago. Here we report the result of artificial pollination using wood charcoal powder as a diluent. Three charcoal powders of oak (Quercus acutissima), bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides), and pine (Pinus densiflora) trees were compared for their physical characteristics, kiwifruit pollen viability after mixing with charcoal powders, and fruit size at harvest. The flowers which were pollinated with charcoal and pollen mixture were more easily distinguished owing to their black color. Pollen viability in vitro was also maintained for 12 hours after pollens were mixed with charcoal powder. There were no significant differences in fruit set, fruit weight and size at harvest. Furthermore, the cost for the pollen diluent was greatly reduced when charcoal powders were used.
