Abstract:
In the forests of Sweden there are vast amounts of wild growing cowberries (Vaccinium vitis idaea) and blueberries (V. myrtillus). Of the crop, 12 mill. kg are estimated to be picked.
Highbush blueberries may be grown in home gardens but only in the south of the country.
Labour shortage and decreasing supplies of cowberries initiated experiments with domestication fifteen years ago.
The different problems met when cowberry plants are transferred from the forest to the field are being investigated and this report will mainly deal with following items: plant propagation, establishment of plants in the field, mulch effects, fertilizer needs, irrigation, weed control, diseases and pollination.
