ISHS Acta Horticulturae 61: Symposium on Vaccinium Culture in Europe

TETRAPLOID HYBRIDS FROM CROSSES OF DIPLOID, TETRAPLOID, AND HEXAPLOID VACCINIUM SPECIES

Author:   A.D. Draper
Abstract:
Native diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid Vaccinium species were used in crosses of the USDA blueberry breeding program in ways that gave tetraploid hybrids. The tetraploid hybrids were crossed with cultivated tetraploid highbush blueberry to improve the quality. Winter hardiness, low-chilling, concentrated ripening, disease resistance, heat tolerance, and consistent production are the major genetic characteristics sought in segregating populations from intercrosses of the hybrids and crosses of the hybrids with cultivated highbush.
