INVESTIGATIONS OF PROBLEMS REGARDING THE WINTERING OF CRANBERRIES (VACCINIUM MACROCARPON AIT.)

Author:   H. Haeckel
Abstract:
The capacity of cranberry twigs to resist frost was determined in climatic chambers. The results showed that for temperatures below about - 18° C, the twigs suffered untolerable damages. Detailed computations were carried out based upon models whereby the thermal conditions of unprotected cranberry twigs were to be computed. The results of these computations show that damages are to be expected only in exceptional cases, as dangerous temperatures occur only above the protective snow blankets. Moreover, the protective effect of coverings such as straw, foil, and brushwood were investigated. The foil had the best protective effects. Flooding with water also proved to be a favourable winter protection. Comparisons made between the winter climates in the primary cultivation areas in America and the potential German cultivation areas, in general, indicate a safe winter passage for the plants.
