ADVANCED TESTING OF BLUEBERRY VARIETIES IN SLOVENIA

Author:   M. Oblak
Abstract:
The testing of 11 leading american blueberries in the period of their full productivity was continued in the north-western part of Slovenia on the peaty, acid soil.

From the report, it is evident that the climate conditions are suitable for the growth of blueberries. All observed varieties blossomed towards the end of April when the spring frost danger is over in our country or it is not critical for the blossoms of blueberries.

The significant differences concerning productivity were noticed to exist between the varieties and years, and also by the interactions of varieties and years. The 5-year average yields per bush were relatively low and the values obtained for the varieties are 1,95 kg/Earliblue/to 3,51 kg/ Rancocas/. However, in one particular year, the average production was 3,03 kg/Earliblue/to 7,01 kg/Rancocas/per bush. The average weight of 100 berries of different varieties varied from 78,0 g to 207,1 g. The vitamin C content was low; it was 6,89 and 9,34 mg %. The amount of sugar did not change to a great extent/from 7,02 to 10,72 %/. The average value of citric acid ranges from 0,91 to 3,3 %, and the dry matter content from 11,4 and 14,1 %.

Almost every year, the crop was markably reduced by the attack of birds.
