ISHS Acta Horticulturae 61: Symposium on Vaccinium Culture in Europe

PROGRESS WITH BLUEBERRIES IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND

Author:   J.G.D. Lamb
Abstract:
Over a period of 11 years, the blueberry cultivars Bluecrop, Berkeley, and Dixi have outyielded 6 others included in an observational trial on a loam soil. Maximum yields (2.7 – 8.4 kg per bush) to date were reached in the ninth year. Less productive cultivars showed this characteristic from the initial crop onward. Over 4 years, plants mulched with sawdust gave high yields, followed by those mulched with moss peat. Straw mulched plants gave the lowest yield; lower than those left unmulched. Though plantations have been successfully established on peatland, they are not yet sufficiently mature for comparison. Problems associated with the extension of experimental data to commercial practice are mentioned.
