ISHS Acta Horticulturae 606: International Workshop on Characterization of Genetic Resources of Temperate Zone Fruits for the Tropics and Subtropics

THE NEED OF NETWORK FOR GENETIC RESOURCES IN TFZTS

Author:   G.A. Finetto
Keywords:   temperate fruits, subtropics, germplasm, conservation, characterisation.
Abstract:
Temperate fruits in the tropics and subtropics suffer of several constraints that limit crop development. Even though many countries have introduced cultivars and rootstocks from temperate areas, few countries have established activities concerning the collection and conservation of local genetic resources of temperate fruit trees, as well as developing suited cultivars and rootstocks to local environment.
Design of scientific methods for setting conservation priorities should be devoted to both, main and wild temperate species with high nutritional value. Moreover collections should be made in areas where some species have a rapid and progressive genetic erosion.
Germplasm characterisation could be the background to design strategies for conservation (seed, nursery and the in vitro conservation even involving farmers) and use of genetic resources, and in the issue of seed-plant material security. The network of genetic resources of Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics (TZFTS) could provide co-operative studies to promote efficient conservation strategies and exchange of germplasm of selected temperate fruits and their wild relatives.
