Abstract:
The fig (Ficus carica L.) is one of the predominant crops in Tunisian oases after date-palm. Fig culture consists of ecotypes and cultivars locally called varieties. These are clonally propagated and widely extended through out all the areas. However, for several decades Tunisian fig groves are seriously menaced by drastic genetic erosion due to biotic and abiotic stresses. In order to preserve local genotypes and to improve fig culture in oasis groves, we become interested by the genetic diversity analysis in this important crop. Hence, a study has been carried out using a set of varieties and a large number of morphological characters. The isozymic analysis has been also performed. Here we report how the mentioned parameters could provide us markers suitable in the evaluation of fig genetic diversity and as criteria in the variety identification. These traits were also useful for the genetic preservation in this crop.
