USING GIRDLING TO IMPROVE BLACK MISSION FIG SIZE

Abstract:
In this three-year experiment, trunk girdling was examined as a way to increase Black Mission dried fig size and value per tree. A single trunk girdling from early June through mid July significantly increased the % of choice and extra choice size figs as well as per tree yield. The final effect on fig value per tree was produced by both factors, the effect of girdling on yield per tree and the effect of girdling on fig size. Trunk girdling from June 4 through June 15 significantly increased dried fig yield per tree. For the three successive seasons, 1997-1999, girdling in early June produced 22, 28 and 29 kg/tree of dried figs versus 18, 20 and 21 kg/tree on control trees. Similarly, in 1997, 1998 and 1999, these girdling dates produced 91%, 79% and 77% figs in the choice, extra choice, fancy and extra fancy size classifications versus 83%, 68% and 67% in the ungirdled controls. Thus, while the increases in price per pound for dried figs are a direct result of a significantly higher percentage of figs in the choice, extra choice and fancy categories, increases in value per tree or hectare value are the result of significant increases in both higher per tree yields and a higher percentage of larger size figs.
