Abstract:
A germplasm of 130 fig cultivars of different origin is set at the Experimental Station “P. Martucci” which belongs to the University of Bari and is located at Valenzano near Bari.
Fifteen cultivars for breba crop have been studied for biological and technological characters in the years 1999 and 2000. The cultivars analyzed were: Faraone, Fico bianco, Petrelli, Precocissimo, Terlizzi nero, Troiano nero, Sel. 7M, Sel. 13M, Sel. 21M, Sel. 22M, Sel. 34M, Sel. 7T, Sel. 22T, Sel. 24T, Sel. 3A/M.
The ripening time was variable in the two years because of the climatic conditions.
In fact, in the year 2000 the ripening was 10-15 days early with respect to 1999 and it began with “Precocissimo” at the end of May and lasted until the end of June with the cv. “Terlizzi nero”. The ripening of all the cultivars lasted 7-12 days and this allowed to pick fruits at optimum maturity.
The mean fruit weight was high in all the cultivars examined, ranging from 134 g (Fico bianco) to 62.2 g (Sel. 13M), whereas a considerable value of fruit length (8.16 cm) was exhibited by the cv. “Faraone”. The most frequent color of the skin of the fifteen cultivars was white (light green) whereas the flesh was red with different shades.
The percentage of sucrose was between 15 and 19 °Bx.
The yield of breba resulted high especially in the case of “Fico bianco”, “Petrelli”, “Sel. 7M”, “Sel. 13M” and “Sel. 22T”.
Cultivars particularly mentionable for good biological and technological characters were: “Petrelli”, “Faraone”, “Fico bianco”, “Terlizzi nero” and “Sel. 7T”.
