Abstract:
FOREWORD
The 2nd ISHS International Symposium on Fig was held at Cáceres, Spain, on May 2001 and it gathered researchers, professors, technicians and managers of the fig sector.
Scientific papers on different aspects of fig research were presented and its discussion contributed to increase the knowledge about this specie, underutilized for years, in order to be a real fruit alternative in certain regions.
The number of participants was 75 people coming from different countries of the Mediterranean are (Albany, Croatia, France, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey), so as from Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and USA.
We will like to thank to those all organizations that contributed to the celebration of the Symposium, especially to:
The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ) of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM).
The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS).
The Spanish Society of Horticultural Science (SECH).
The Diputacion of Cáceres, that kindly allow the Symposium will be held at its building, “Complejo Cultural San Francisco”.
The Consejería de Agricultura y Medio Ambiente of the Junta de Extremadura that allow the organization of the Symposium, and to the Consejería de Educación Ciencia y Tecnología that financed part of the expenses of the Symposium through the Special Action CON10B339.

PREFACE
This volume of Acta Horticulturae is the Proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Fig.
Invited and keynote speakers and selected authors of offered oral papers and posters had the opportunity to submit their manuscripts for publication in this volume of the series Acta Horticulturae.
Submitted manuscripts were reviewed by the Editors and Members of the Editorial Board and amended according to the referee suggestions prior to acceptance.
The ISHS acknowledges the cooperation received from the Editors on reviewing the manuscripts which was a significant contribution to the overall quality of the publication.
