THE EFFECT OF DWARF AND VIGOROUS ROOTSTOCKS ON FRUIT SIZE AND COLOUR OF 'BURLAT' AND 'MERTON PREMIER' SWEET CHERRIES

Authors:   M. Sitarek, Z.S. Grzyb
Keywords:   Sweet cherry, rootstock, cultivar, fruit size, skin colour
Abstract:

‘Burlat’ and ’Merton Premier’ sweet cherry trees grafted on P-HL A, P-HL C, Colt and F 12/1 clonal rootstocks as well as on Mazzard seedlings were investigated for size and colour of fruits.
‘Burlat’ sweet cherry trees on both P-HL rootstock types in comparison with Mazzard seedlings, F 12/1 and Colt produced less fruits with the diameter larger than 23 mm. In the case of the cultivar ‘Merton Premier’, of medium fruit size, the results were rather different. No significant differences between rootstocks were found in the diameter and colour of fruits, either in the group of the biggest fruits or in the group of the fruits with the diameter of 19-22 mm. In comparison to Mazzard seedlings, Colt rootstock did not have an effect on the fruit quality of sweet cherry trees in this experiment.
