RESULTS OF GRAPE IMPROVEMENT BY CLONE SELECTION IN PÉCS

Authors:   L. Diófási, G. Bíróné Toma, M. Khidhir Kinan
Abstract:
Institute since its establishment (1949). Researchers of the institute have reached nationally and internationally recognized results in the area of clone selection as well as improvement by crossbreeding. The 4-step method of clone selection was developed by Márton Németh in the 1950s. With the 4-step method of clone selection an economically valuable starting vine-stock (mother-vine) can be turned into a stock-field of 10 thousand vine-stocks in about 10-15 years by gradual breeding. (Figure 1) His selection method has been widely used since then.
Researcher, Ferenc Király, who later became successful in the field of improvement by cross-breeding (by producing Zenit, Zengő and other varieties) also joined the project. Both of them concentrated on the selection of late-ripening wine grapes, which determine the character of the wine regions in South Transdanubia. Their work was supported by András Pfaff, who had been involved in grape selection for decades even before the Institute was established.
