BREEDING SEEDLESS GRAPES IN SOUTH AFRICA BY MEANS OF EMBRYO RESCUE

Authors:   P. Burger, C.A. Gerber, A. Gerber, P.J.L. Ellis
Abstract:
The protocol followed at the ARC Infruitec-Nietvoorbij for embryo rescue is described briefly. Results obtained in the laboratory (number of embryos rescued from rudimentary seeds and plant development), field results (seedlessness in offspring) and cold storage evaluation are discussed. An average of 10 000 rudimentary seeds are cultured annually. The number of embryos isolated from these vary between 15% and 85%, while plants obtained from embryos vary between 5% and 55%. Seedlessness in the F1 generation varies between 55% and 92%, indicating the importance of parents. One hundred and seventeen plants (from a total of 983) have been selected for further evaluation of fruit quality, storage capacity and drying potential (for raisins).
