Abstract:
Embryogenic calli have been produced from 19 of the 41 grapevine cultivars tested, including internationally grown and traditional Hungarian varieties, novel candidates, as well as rootstock cultivars.
We have applied a simple yet effective transformation method with optimized conditions, which was tested in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using an nptII/gusA gene construct.
The putative transgenic lines expressed the gusA gene.
T-DNA transfer and integration was further confirmed by PCR analysis of these plants.
Further research efforts are in progress to introduce economically useful genes as well into grapevines.
