Abstract:
Twenty-five white and ten red wine-grape varieties obtained by Hungarian breeders have been approved by the state since 1970. Most of them are still on the national list of varieties, yet there is a great difference in their range.
The success of new cultivars is determined on the basis of their proportion in grafting production.
In the seventies and eighties after their state registration a lot of new varieties showed a few years of popularity and a high percentage in their propagation.
In the nineties the propagation and utilisation of the new Hungarian varieties decreased.
Over the past two-three years, there has been a slow increase in the propagation of new Hungarian varieties.
In the long run, as the consumers' attention turn to environmental problems and food safety, the new, resistant varieties have a fair chance for success.
